Population

A region's population increases or decreases because of the people who choose to live there. That choice may be the result of being born there and desiring to stay, or of choosing to re-locate from somewhere else. Whatever the circumstance, monitoring change in the size and movement of a population is an important measure of well-being.

This section provides selected demographic characteristics of the District of Columbia population from decennial censuses, population estimates, projections, forecasts and surveys. Topics covered include total population numbers District-wide and by small areas, and population by age, race, gender and ethnicity. Both historical data and the most current data available are be provided.
