The DC Architects Directory is a collection of 100 biographies on architects from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries whose work has contributed to the appearance and development of Washington, DC. The architects selected are those who were the most prolific and influential in the development of “local” Washington, including the city’s residential, commercial, institutional and religious buildings. Biographies of the city’s Municipal Architects who designed the city’s municipal buildings will be included under a separate heading in the future. The biographies were written based largely upon primary source research including city directories, the Historic DC Buildings Permit Database, architect registration files, newspaper articles and historic architectural drawings collections.
The DC Architects Directory project was funded in part by a US Department of Interior, National Park Service Preservation Fund grant administered by the District of Columbia State Historic Preservation Office.
