OP Will Sponsor a Green Your Home Expo on Saturday

Wednesday, August 26, 2009

(Washington, DC) -  Join District of Columbia officials and over 30 “green” exhibitors for the “Green Your Home Expo” Saturday, September 12, from 10 am - 2 pm at the University of the District of Columbia’s outdoor plaza, located at 4200 Connecticut Avenue, NW in front of building 38 and 39.

Attendees can participate in activities and get information on ways to ‘green’ their homes and neighborhoods.  The expo will feature residential energy efficiency companies, renewable energy generation system installers, sustainable design and construction firms, green household product distributors, among others.  Other ‘green’ fun activities include live music, a farmers' market, and bicycle eco-tours. The event is open for all.

The expo also features two hour-long panel discussions from experts on sustainability, climate change, and residential greening. The first panel Think Globally: Climate Change and Cities includes Roger Platt, US Green Building Council Vice President for Global Policy and Law and James Corless, Director, Transportation for America Campaign. The second panel Act Locally: Green Your Home includes Anya Schoolman, President, Mt. Pleasant Solar Cooperative and Maisie Hughes, Director of Planning and Design, Casey Trees. The panels will begin at noon, in the Windows Lounge located on the 3rd floor in Building 38.

The expo is a component of the Office of Planning’s Neighborhood Sustainability Indicators Pilot Project (NSIPP), which will engage local residents in establishing a framework to track sustainability at the neighborhood level. Outcomes of the project will include a neighborhood-specific definition of sustainability; sustainability indicators to track and monitor progress toward becoming a green community; and private sector-led strategies for achieving sustainability.

For additional information on the event or NSIPP, contact Andrea Limauro of the Office of Planning at (202) 442-7605 or [email protected].
