Florida Avenue Market Small Area Plan Main Page

Reference:
SAP5, SAP6

The plan provides a broad framework for considering new development and improve the safety and operations of the current market. Redeveloping a functioning wholesale and retail market is complex and requires the participation of vendors, merchants, and property owners.

The plan seeks to strike a balance between meeting the current and future needs of all stakeholders in considering future development. In this context, community engagement was critical to creating a successful plan. The planning process began in the spring of 2007 and a total of five public meetings were held with afternoon and evening sessions to accommodate property and business owners as well as residents and other stakeholders.

The Office of Planning released the draft Florida Avenue Market Small Area Plan for a 30 day public comment period on April 17, 2009 and concluded on May 18, 2009. The Council of the District of Columbia approved the plan on October 6, 2009 through resolution #R18-0257. Archival information on the public engagement process, hearing transcript, and public comment responses can be requested through the project manager.
