Work Not Requiring a Building Permit

The following work does not require a building permit, and is not subject to historic preservation review:

Routine Exterior Maintenance

• Ordinary repairs, such as simple do-it-yourself repairs like replacing a broken piece of glass, reattaching or tightening loose materials, etc.
• Painting and paint color selection (except painting of unpainted masonry on historic landmarks)

Routine Window Work

• Installation or removal of window screens, storm windows, and security bars not blocking required egress
• Window repair (such as reglazing, caulking, weather-stripping, consolidating deteriorated elements, and installation of new hardware)
• Portable window air conditioners
• Non-commercial awnings

Routine Site Work

• Planting or removal of trees and shrubs
• Swings and other playground equipment associated with 1- or 2-family dwellings
• Sculpture and ornaments

Permit Work Not Requiring Preservation Review

The following work does require a building permit, but is not subject to historic preservation review. Applications may be referred to the Historic Preservation Office for a clearance to ensure that the plans do not include work subject to preservation review.
Interior Work

• Interior alterations (except to specifically designated historic interiors)
• Non-structural interior demolition

Miscellaneous

• Use and occupancy permits
