This FAQ and guide are introductions to the systematic sequence of evaluation, planning and decision-making required to carry out an effective green retrofit for owners, tenants, managers and residents of older historic buildings. This document has been prepared by the DC Department of Energy & Environment (DOEE) and the Historic Preservation Office (HPO). 

The guide was approved by the Historic Preservation Review Board on May 1, 2025.
