Preservation Office Releases Two New Brochures

Thursday, December 3, 2009

(Washington, DC) -  The District of Columbia Historic Preservation Office is pleased to announce the release two new brochures as part of its Historic Preservation series. Publication of Downtown Washington and the Modernism in Washington brings to 23 the number of brochures related to local history and historic preservation produced by the office.

A revised edition of Downtown Washington was also released, updating the Downtown Historic District brochure. New photos and information on historical and social growth in the area are highlighted, particularly along the Pennsylvania Avenue and 15th Street corridors. This brochure was co-produced by the DC Preservation League.

Modernism in Washington, adapted from a study by Robinson & Associates (DC Modern: A Context for Modernism in the District of Columbia), includes definitions of what Modernism means in DC along with many examples of Modern buildings. The brochure explains the transition from Washington’s prevalent classicist styles to Modernism, delving into materials and technology, urban renewal, and contextualism and providing examples of residential, institutional, government, and ecclesiastic architecture.

Individual print copies of the Downtown Washington and Modernism in Washington may be obtained by contacting HPO by calling (202) 442-8800 or sending an email request to [email protected].

Development and production of these brochures was made possible by a Historic Preservation Fund matching grant from the US Department of the Interior, National Park Service.

Other brochures in the series include Anacostia, Archaeology in the District of Columbia, Capitol Hill, Cleveland Park, Dupont Circle, Foggy Bottom, Georgetown, Greater 14th Street and Logan Circle, Kalorama Triangle, LeDroit Park, Massachusetts Avenue, Mount Pleasant, Mount Vernon Square, Schools for All, Shaw, Sheridan-Kalorama, Sixteenth Street, Strivers Section, Takoma Park, and Woodley Park.
