District Initiates Webcast of Historic Preservation Review Board Meetings

Thursday, May 22, 2008

(Washington, DC) - Starting today, residents can watch live hearings of District of Columbia Historic Preservation Review Board Hearings. The Historic Preservation Review Board, whose members are appointed by the Mayor, designates and oversees their preservation by reviewing exterior alterations and new construction affecting historic properties in the District of Columbia. The city currently has approximately 500 landmarks and 43 historic districts encompassing over 26,000 buildings.

“As the District becomes a world-class, globally-competitive city, we are excited about the opportunity that technology affords us to encourage more engagement from our residents to realize the city’s adaptive reuse and preservation potential,” said Harriet Tregoning, Director of the Office of Planning’s Historic Preservation Office.

Internet broadcasts will be held on the fourth Thursday of each month (January through July, September and October) and on the third Thursday in November and December. Hearings begin at 10 am and normally run until 5:30 pm. Meetings are held in the Office of Zoning Hearing Room, #220 South, 441 4th Street, NW (One Judiciary Square).

“We are glad to provide this new service to provide District residents and hope it will broaden the understanding of how the staff of the State Historic Preservation Office and the HPRB work to revitalize residential communities and the downtown area, and capitalize on the unique assets of the past” said State Historic Preservation Officer David Maloney.
