DC Celebrates National Community Planning Month With a Photography Competition

Friday, October 3, 2008

(Washington, DC) - Mayor Adrian M. Fenty and the Washington DC Office of Planning are pleased to announce the launch of a citywide photography competition in honor of National Community Planning Month. National Community Planning Month is an annual event developed by the American Planning Association that promotes the field of planning. This year’s theme is green communities.

“We are pleased to celebrate National Community Planning month and showcase the walkability and great public spaces of our great city,” said Harriet Tregoning, Director of the Office of Planning.

In 2007, The Washington DC region was named one of the most walkable communities in the US, with the highest per capita number of walkable places. DC has some of the most walkable neighborhoods and districts in the country and has been nationally recognized for its convenience and walkability, with lots of locations where residents can walk to work, shop, dine and play. This photo competition is intended to feature streets, sidewalks and public spaces in the District, which are a demonstration of the city’s walkable character.

This competition is open to all residents of the District. It begins on October 1 and will end October 31. The winning entry will be announced in December. Pictures may be displayed online after the winner is announced.
