The Latino Community in Washington, DC is a StoryMap created by the DC Historic Preservation Office to highlight the findings of a recent (2025) study. The purpose of the study was to develop a narrative history of the Latino community and to use that historic context to identify and evaluate cultural resources associated with Washington's Latino community for potential listing in the DC Inventory of Historic Sites and the National Register of Historic Places. The StoryMap explores the history of the Latino community through four categories: Latino Pioneers, Employment and Commerce, Latino Institutions, Arts and Media, and Political Inflection. The StoryMap also provides a map of the city showcasing the dozens of sites identified as part of the study for their important associations with the Latino community.
This material was produced by the DC Historic Preservation Office with information compiled as part of the historic context study, The History of the Latino Community of Washington, DC: 1943-1991. The study was undertaken, in part, with assistance from an Underrepresented Communities Grant, administered by the National Park Service, Department of the Interior. Any opinions, findings, and conclusions or recommendations expressed in this material are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the views of the Department of the Interior.
