The DC Historic Preservation Office created The Queer Capital: Historic LGBTQ Spaces in Washington, DC StoryMap to bring together a collection of stories and locations that touch on the diversity of queer history in the District of Columbia. This history is local, but by nature of being in the nation’s capital, it ties into larger narratives about the queer community. This StoryMap explores DC queer history through four categories: Arts and Culture, Health and Wellness, Social Spaces, and Protest and Advocacy.
This material was produced by the DC Historic Preservation Office with information compiled as part of the Historic Context Statement for Washington’s LBGTQ Resources. The study was undertaken, in part, with assistance from an Underrepresented Communities Grant, administered by the National Park Service, Department of the Interior. Any opinions, findings, and conclusions or recommendations expressed in this material are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the views of the Department of the Interior.
