Economic, Social, and Equity Impact of Historic Preservation

In the lead-up to DC2050, the rewrite of DC’s Comprehensive Plan, the Office of Planning is collaborating with the DC Preservation League, PlaceEconomics, and an equity consultant to analyze the impact that historic districts have on the economic health of the city, the social fabric of neighborhoods, and efforts to create a racially equitable city. This study will allow DCOP to:

  1. Identify essential data sources
  2. Analyze demographics in historic districts and non-designated areas citywide
  3. Compare economic, social, and racial equity impacts as case studies in:
    • Mt Pleasant (Ward 1)
    • Cleveland Park (Ward 3)
    • Bloomingdale (Ward 5)
    • Kingman Park (Ward 7)
    • Anacostia (Ward 8)
  4. Establish a factual foundation for public discussion on historic preservation’s role in DC2050

PlaceEconomics has decades of experience conducting research on the impacts of historic preservation. They are engaging a consultant to assist with community engagement and applying an equity lens to their findings. Read other studies from across the country on PlaceEconomics’ website.
