The Historic Preservation Review Board met and considered the following items on July 27, 2006.

HISTORIC LANDMARK AND HISTORIC DISTRICT NOMINATIONS

Washington Heights Historic District, Case #06-12 (ANC 1C).
Historic District designated. Nomination will be forwarded to the National Register for listing.  Vote 11-0.

Anne Archbold Hall, 19th Street & Massachusetts Avenue, SE (Reservation 13), Case #04-02 (ANC 6B).
Building designated. Nomination will be forwarded to the National Register for listing.  Vote 11-0.


MASTER PLAN REVIEW

George Washington University, Foggy Bottom Campus Preservation Plan.
Informational presentation only. No written staff report. No action taken by Board.

 

HISTORIC LANDMARK

First African New Church, 2101 10th Street NW, HPA #06-240, revised concept.
Revised concept design approved with minor comments for refinement; applicant directed to return for preliminary review appropriate.  Staff report adopted. Vote 9-0-2.


CAPITOL HILL HISTORIC DISTRICT

Capitol Hill Day School (Dent School), 210-214 South Carolina Avenue SE, HPA #06-138,
concept/addition.
Concept design for scheme “C” favored; applicant directed to return with refinements. Staff report adopted. Vote 10-1.


DUPONT CIRCLE HISTORIC DISTRICT

1745 Swann Street NW, HPA #06-319, concept/addition.
Concept design for front porch, rear addition and roof deck approved; concept for roof addition denied. Staff report adopted. Vote  9-0.


DOWNTOWN HISTORIC DISTRICT

600 Massachusetts Avenue, NW (and 609-631 I Street NW), HPA #06-289,  concept/demolition, alteration, new Construction.
Concept approved with design refinements requested. Staff report approved.   Vote 10-0.


U STREET HISTORIC DISTRICT

THIS CASE WAS PULLED FROM THE AGENDA.
4:10 – 4:30 p.m.    1902-06 14th Street NW, HPA #06-394, demolition .
 

MOUNT VERNON SQUARE HISTORIC DISTRICT

1221 and 1223 4th Street NW, HPA #06-374/375, concept/demolition and new construction.
Demolition of two frame buildings approved based on loss of structural integrity; new construction not reviewed due to insufficient plans.  Staff report adopted.  Vote 8-1-1.

 

CONSENT CALENDAR
JULY 27, 2006

The Historic Preservation Review Board considered the following consent items on July 27, 2006. These items were proposed for approval by the Board based upon the written record, without discussion.

Historic Landmarks

Brownley Building, 1309 F Street, NW, and Harris & Ewing Photographic Studio, 1313 F Street, NW, HPA #06-384, alteration.
Project approved in concept design. Storefront will be developed with consultation and approval of staff. Vote 11-0.

Anacostia Historic District

1239 Good Hope Road, SE, HPA #06-342, two-story rear addition.
Approved addition with adjustment of rear fenestration. Vote 11-0.

Capitol Hill Historic District

830 D Street, SE, HPA #06-379, concept/rear addition.
Concept approved. Final project approval delegated to staff. Vote 11-0.

516 5th Street, SE, HPA #06-372, rear addition.
Addition and new garage approved. Final project approval delegated to staff.  Vote 11-0.

Cleveland Park Historic District

3113 Macomb Street, NW, HPA #06-376, enclose rear porch, deck.
Approved porch enclosure and deck. Final project approval delegated to staff. Vote 11-0.


3320 Rowland Place, NW, HPA #06-337, side screened porch, front portico.
Concept approved. Final project approval delegated to staff.  Vote 11-0.

Dupont Circle Historic District

1830 18th Street, NW, HPA #06-282, revised concept/new construction of apartment building.
Revised project approved in concept. Vote 11-0.

Greater U Street Historic District

1900 Vermont Avenue, NW, HPA #06-178, concept/seven duplex row houses.
Concept approved with further consultation with staff. Project will return to the board when appropriate for preliminary approval. Vote 11-0.

1324 Wallach Place NW, HPA #06-378, concept/rooftop addition.
Approved. Proposed addition is not visible from any street and is consistent in height and massing with its context. Vote 11-0.

Pennsylvania Avenue National Historic Site

1000 F Street, NW, HPA #06-339, concept/demolition, alteration, addition.
Concept plan approved. Applicant will submit for preliminary approval prior to submission of final plans. Preliminary plans should also include developed plans for the restoration of the historic façade and salvage of significant features of the old Waffle Shop. Vote 11-0.


DENIAL CALENDAR

The Historic Preservation met and considered the following items on July 27, 2006.  These items were proposed for denial by the Board based upon the written record, without discussion.

Mount Vernon Square Historic District

1219 New Jersey Avenue, NW, HPA #06-369, vinyl windows.
Project denied as being inconsistent with the purposes of the preservation act and the Window Standards. Vote 11-0.   

Greater U Street Historic District

1461 Florida Avenue, NW, HPA #05-339, concept/fourth story addition to three-story row house.
Project denied as insistent with the purposes of the historic preservation act.
