The Historic Preservation Review Board met to consider the following items on April 24, 2008.  


HISTORIC LANDMARK NOMINATIONS

Tenleytown Multiple-Property Thematic Document, Case #07-31.
After review of the National Register of Historic Places Multiple Property Listing: Tenleytown in Washington, D.C.: Historic and Architectural Resources, ca. 1770-1941, the staff recommended that the Historic Preservation Review Board adopt the historic context report. Further, that additional discussion regarding archaeological resources be added to the document before forwarding the Multiple Property listing to the National Register of Historic Places. Adopted by a vote of 9-0.

Western Union Telegraph Company, Washington Radio Terminal, 4623 41st Street NW, Case #04-05.
This agenda item has been continued until the May 22, 2008 Hearing.

Eldbrooke United Methodist Church, 4100 River Road, NW, Case #06-11.
The staff report recommended the Review Board approve the designation of Eldbrooke United Methodist Church to the D.C. Inventory of Historic Sites.  It is further recommended that a National Register nomination be prepared under the cover of the Multiple Property Document: Tenleytown in Washington, D.C.: Historic and Architectural Resources, 1770-1941, and that it be forwarded to the National Register of Historic Places.  Approved by a vote of 9-0.

The Methodist Cemetery, Murdock Mill Road, NW, Case #06-13.
The staff report recommended the Review Board designate as a District of Columbia Landmark the Methodist Cemetery. It is further recommended that the application be forwarded to the National Park Service for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. Approved by a vote of 9-0.  


MOUNT PLEASANT HISTORIC DISTRICT

1709 Irving Street, NW, HPA #08-121, alteration/front basement entrance.
The staff report recommended the Review Board approve the alterations as consistent with the purposes of the preservation act. Approved by a vote of  9-0.

1714 Irving Street, NW, HPA #08-120, alteration/front basement entrance.  
The staff report recommended that the Review Board approve the alterations as consistent with the purposes of the preservation act. Approved by a vote of 9-0.


FOGGY BOTTOM HISTORIC DISTRICT
912 25th Street, NW, HPA #08-157, alteration/reconstruction of roof addition.
This agenda item has been continued until the May 22, 2008 hearing.


WOODLEY PARK HISTORIC DISTRICT
2841 29th Street, NW, HPA #08-245, concept/second story addition and rear alterations.
This agenda item has been continued until the May 22 Hearing in order to give the applicant an opportunity to discuss the project with neighbors and possibly revise the proposed addition. Vote 8-0 to continue the hearing.

2710 Cathedral Avenue, NW, HPA #08-246, concept/demolition of garage, construction of new garage.
The staff report recommended the Board support the proposed reconstruction of the garage to generally reflect its current architectural character but wide enough to accommodate two cars, but at a typical one-story height, without an additional loft or mezzanine level. Vote: Approved 8-0.


U STREET HISTORIC DISTRICT
1349 V Street, NW, HPA #08-248, concept/new construction of rowhouse.
The Review Board approved the proposed height, mass, footprint and façade composition, and encouraged the applicant to continue developing the proposal in consultation with staff. Vote: 6-0.

1400-1418 U Street, NW and 1912-1944 U Street, NW, HPA #08-033, revised concept/new construction.
The Review Board approved the height, mass, and architectural direction of the project, adopted several recommendations provided by the ANC and community organizations, and directed the applicants to continue working with the staff on design development, detailing, and material selection and return to the Board for preliminary review when appropriate. Vote: 5-0.

MOUNT VERNON SQUARE HISTORIC DISTRICT
444 M Street, NW, HPA #08-237, concept/alterations, roof addition.
The Review Board approved the conceptual design for a four-story brick rear addition as compatible with the character of this property and delegated final construction approval to staff. Vote: 5-0.
    

CONSENT CALENDAR
APRIL 24, 2008
The Historic Preservation Review Board considered the following consent items on April 24, 2008.  These items were proposed for approval by the Board based upon the written record, without discussion. The Consent Calendar was approved by a vote of  9-0.

Mount Pleasant Historic District
1724 Park Road, NW, HPA #08-199, three-story addition.
The staff report recommended the Review Board approve the proposed addition and alterations with the following conditions and delegate final approval to staff; (A)The restoration of the front elevation will include the installation of appropriate windows, doors, and porch elements, such as sixteen-over-one windows, and will preserve the existing intact historic features such as the clay tile roof, and (B) the restoration of the garage will include the installation of historically appropriate garage doors.


Sixteenth Street Historic District
1511 16th Street, NW, HPA #08-247, concept/rear addition and alterations.
The staff report recommended the Review Board approve the project as consistent with the purposes of the preservation act, and that final approval of construction plans be delegated to staff.
