Job Summary
The DC Office of Planning (OP) has the lead responsibility for planning the long-term growth of the District of Columbia. OP provides the vision, framework and principles that guide land use, change, growth, and development of an equitable and vibrant city. OP undertakes citywide and neighborhood planning and engagement; urban design and development review; historic preservation; mapping and data analysis and serves as the official Census State Data Center. OP is the steward of the District’s Comprehensive Plan, which advances housing, economic recovery, racial equity, resilience, and coordination of public resources and civic infrastructure.
This position functions as an Historic Architect within the Historic Preservation Office (HPO) supporting and coordinating efforts throughout the Office of Planning to encourage and regulate the rehabilitation and reuse of historic properties by private property owners and local and Federal agencies.
Duties and Responsibilities
Provides architectural expertise to the Historic Preservation Office. Assists HPO management and staff in the review of project plans, drawing on expertise in architecture, construction and design to make recommendations that synthesize good preservation practice with modern construction practices; maintains office technical and architectural source files; stays current on architectural and construction issues relevant to historic preservation practices.
Assists HPO inspectors in the review of on-going construction projects to ensure compliance with approved plans. Provides guidance to inspectors on appropriate preservation practices and program priorities; conducts site inspections as a certified inspector; works with owners and contractors in resolving non-compliant projects and violations.
