Guidelines for Overhead Building Projections

The District of Columbia has a long history of allowing building projections into public space to encourage buildings that are attractive, inviting, and have a human scale. Awning, canopy, marquee, belt course, cornice, and roof overhangs are building projections allowed to extend over a property line or building restriction line and into public space. The Guidelines for Overhead Building Projections posted here provide guidance on these types of overhead building projections and when, where, and how they can be used to embellish a building.
