Protection of historic resources begins with sound preservation planning. The Historic Preservation Office (HPO) leads this effort in coordination with DC communities and colleagues at the Office of Planning (OP).
DC Historic Preservation Plan
The 2025 DC Historic Preservation Plan sets forth a vision and goals to guide ongoing preservation efforts in the District. The Plan establishes a guide for both HPO programs and community preservation activities.
Ward Heritage Guides
If you are interested in learning more about your neighborhood, take a look at the heritage guide for your ward. These guides highlight what makes the culture and environment of each DC ward special. They also discuss the challenges facing local communities as the city changes.
Preservation Partnerships
HPO joins with local non-profit organizations to engage DC residents in exploring local history and honoring distinguished accomplishments. Greater appreciation of the city’s wealth of landmarks and wide-ranging heritage can promote more thoughtful preservation planning.
In Your Neighborhood
Many OP projects and initiatives address neighborhood planning issues that may affect historic resources. Find out more about upcoming projects that may affect your neighborhood, and participate in planning for your ward.
Annual Reports
Each fiscal year, HPO prepares an annual report summarizing the achievements of the District’s preservation program. By showing current trends and progress toward achieving long-term goals, these reports help plan for the future.
