Inspections and Enforcement

The DC Department of Buildings (DOB) is responsible for conducting building inspections and enforcement citywide, including in historic areas, to ensure compliance with all aspects of DC building and property maintenance codes.  The Historic Preservation Office (HPO) coordinates with DOB to ensure that properties being inspected comply with preservation standards.

Property Maintenance

DC buildings codes require property owners to maintain their properties in safe and sound condition.  If you believe a property is being allowed to deteriorate to the extent that it creates a public safety concern or blighted condition, see “Requesting an Inspection” below.

Identifying Unpermitted Work

If a property is under construction, DC building codes require a permit be posted on the property visible from public space.  The permit lists the work allowed - for example “Interior Work Only” or “Wood Replacement Windows.”

If you are unsure whether active construction has a permit or don’t see a permit posted, you may check the Department of Buildings’ Scout consolidated permit data system to see if a permit has been issued:

https://scout.dcra.dc.gov

Requesting an Inspection

Anyone may request an inspection regarding property maintenance concerns or suspected unpermitted work and through the Department of Building website:

https://dob.dc.gov/service/get-inspection

Or by the following:

  • Calling 202-671-3500 (business hours)
  • Calling 311 (after business hours and weekends)
  • Texting DC311
  • Tweeting @311dcgov

Notifying the Historic Preservation Office

If you are unsure whether work is being conducted according to preservation standards, or have already reported work to the Department of Buildings and want to ensure that Historic Preservation Office is aware of the situation, you may also contact the HPO by emailing [email protected].  Please provide the property address, the nature of your concern, and, if possible, photographs of the property.  This information will assist us in evaluating whether the work is consistent with preservation standards and in coordinating with the Department of Buildings.
