Job Summary
This position is located in the Office of Planning (OP), Neighborhood Planning Team. OP has the lead responsibility for planning the long-term growth of the District of Columbia (D.C.). OP provides the vision, framework and principles that guide land use change, growth, and development of an equitable and vibrant city. OP undertakes citywide and neighborhood planning and engagement; urban design and development review; historic preservation; mapping and data analysis; and serves as the official Census State Data Center. OP is the steward of the District’s Comprehensive Plan, which advances housing, economic recovery, racial equity, resilience, and coordination of public resources and civic infrastructure
This position functions as a Community Planner responsible for providing expert guidance and direction to stakeholders, including the Mayor's Office and DC Council staff, federal agencies, and community stakeholders on urban design matters related to physical planning, citywide policy formation, and neighborhood placemaking in the District of Columbia. The role focuses on shaping the city's growth, promoting sustainable development, and nurturing communities that meet the diverse needs of residents and businesses, while also coordinating and leading successful neighborhood planning initiatives.
Duties and Responsibilities
Incumbent manages and prepares plans conducting technical and policy analysis, defining objectives, and formulating specific proposals and recommendations to develop comprehensive and well-informed strategies addressing urban design community development challenges. Identifies critical planning issues as they relate to the city, ward, subareas, neighborhoods, or specific projects and recommends appropriate policy solutions or options for resolution. Prepares reports, studies, and analysis that address planning issues and problems throughout the city or in the wards, subareas, neighborhoods, or, with, regard to specific development projects.
Reviews and comments on proposed zoning revisions, development proposals, and plans of other District and federal agencies. Represents OP at meetings of Advisory Neighborhood Councils (ANC) and other community organizations. Responds to telephone and written public inquiries concerning activities and proposed plans to provide responsive and informative communication with the public hearing activities and proposed plans. Provides support to other divisions within the agency in the preparation and maintenance of the Comprehensive Plan and in the analysis of zoning cases as required to create a seamless and coordinated approach to urban planning, fostering efficiency and effectiveness in decision-making and implementation.
