Job Summary

This position is located in the Office of Planning (OP), Neighborhood Planning Division. OP’s mission is to plan for the long-term growth of the District of Columbia, to help ensure it reflects our values of an inclusive and vibrant city. OP helps the District work toward a positive future in which all District residents can thrive, regardless of income, race, age, or background. OP guides development in the District of Columbia’s distinctive neighborhoods by engaging stakeholders and residents, performing research and analysis, serving as the steward of our historic resources, and publishing various planning documents, racial equity, coordination of public resources and civic infrastructure including the Comprehensive Plan.

The Neighborhood Planning Division within the Office of Planning is responsible for preparing technical planning studies, including small area plans and corridor studies that shape the future development and revitalization of the District’s neighborhoods.  The Office of Planning’s planning process involves community engagement and the use of consultant teams to prepare market studies and provide urban design assistance.

Duties and Responsibilities

The incumbent serves as an advisor to assist the division by compiling data and preparing technical reports to be used in major planning studies or projects. Participates on Small Area Plan teams and assists senior planners in the preparation of existing conditions reports, design, and production of materials for plan reports and outreach and in community engagement. Assists the Associate Director or senior planners in special projects or assignments, including best practices research. Researches, collects, and verifies data on demographics, planning, revitalization, community, or development issues from various sources (technical literature, public meetings, site visits, census data, etc.) to be used in the development of planning studies and projects.

In addition, the incumbent will assist the Associate Director or senior planners in special projects or assignments related to major development projects and planning studies. Prepares specialized technical and analytical reports based on data collected, analyses conducted, or fieldwork/site visits.  Reports include graphs, charts, maps developed to support findings. Communicates and presents major themes and concepts effectively to diverse audiences with varying skills and knowledge levels. The Incumbent contributes to community outreach engagements for planning studies and projects, including preparing for and participating in community meetings.
