Job Summary

The Office of Planning has the lead responsibility for land use planning in the District of Columbia.  The Office of Planning provides the vision, framework, and principles to guide public and private development and land use decisions. The Office supports and coordinates efforts to encourage housing and neighborhood revitalization; expand the employment base for District residents; promote the local economy and retain; expand and attract new businesses; ensure access to efficient and expansive transportation networks; and coordinate sustainability and environment initiatives. The Office is responsible for citywide, neighborhood and revitalization planning; urban design and development review; historic preservation; and mapping and data services and serves as the official Census State Data Center. 

The position is located in the Citywide Strategy and Analysis Division (CSAD). CSAD undertakes cross sector research, and data and spatial analysis in order to develop cohesive policies and long-term plans that guide dynamic and inclusive urban change. The Division includes: The State Data Center; OP’s Geographic Information Systems; and expertise related to various sectors including economic development, housing, sustainability, transportation, and capital facilities planning. The Division helps develop and implement the Comprehensive Plan and other citywide initiatives, and supports OP’s development of area plans, urban design frameworks, community engagement, and development review (zoning) functions. CSAD also provides data and technical expertise to partner agencies.

Duties and Responsibilities

The incumbent coordinates and monitor capital projects recommended in approved small area plans and other planning projects.  Researches, collects, and verifies data on demographics, planning, revitalization, community, or development issues from various sources (technical literature, public meetings, site visits, census data, etc.) to be used in the development of planning studies and projects. Develops information plans for the Associate Director on special projects or assignments related to Major Development projects and planning studies. Prepares specialized technical and analytical reports based on data collected, analyses conducted, or fieldwork/site visits.  Reports include graphs, charts, maps developed to support findings. Communicates and presents major themes and concepts effectively to diverse audiences with varying skills and knowledge level and contributes to community outreach and engagements for planning studies and projects, including preparing for and participating in community meetings.
