Job Summary

This position is located in the Office of Planning (OP), Citywide Strategy and Analysis and Neighborhood Planning, Data and Visualization Divisions.  The OP’s mission is to plan for the long-term growth of the District of Columbia, to help ensure it reflects the values of an inclusive and vibrant city. OP helps the District work toward a positive future in which all District residents can thrive, regardless of income, race, age, or background. OP guides development in the District of Columbia’s distinctive neighborhoods by engaging stakeholders and residents, performing research and analysis, serving as the steward of our historic resources, and publishing various planning documents, including the Comprehensive Plan. 

This position functions as a Demographic Specialist responsible for coordinating the collection, analysis, and reporting of data and research about the District of Columbia and surrounding areas’ demographic issues.

Duties and Responsibilities

The demographic specialist works directly with the Associate Director and senior staff to assist with the collection, research and analysis on area demographic trends and their implications using a broad range of data sources, including Census data, American Community Survey, Current Population Survey and other related sources of information. Conducts demographic research and analysis through a racial equity lens, identifying racial disparities and inequities at the citywide and community levels. Helps highlight areas for improvement related to racial equity. Monitors and evaluates progress towards racial equity goals and objectives.

Works closely with project teams on supporting planning efforts, including framing research approaches, analyzing data, reporting on findings, and informing recommendations. Contributes to the agency’s technical assistance program by responding to inquiries about demographic topics or data and providing custom analyses. Develops research summaries in various formats, including briefing decks and written reports.  Maintains/increases own knowledge and expertise in the field by participating in trainings, seminars etc. as well as review of leading practices in the field.
