Job Summary

This position is located in the Office of Planning (OP), Urban Design Division. The OP mission is to plan for the long-term growth of the District of Columbia, to help ensure it reflects our values of an inclusive and vibrant city. OP helps the District work toward a positive future in which all District residents can thrive, regardless of income, race, age, or background. OP guides development in the District of Columbia’s distinctive neighborhoods by engaging stakeholders and residents, performing research and analysis, serving as the steward of our historic resources, and publishing various planning documents, racial equity, coordination of public resources and civic infrastructure including the Comprehensive Plan.

Duties and Responsibilities

The incumbent of this position serves as the Associate Director (AD), Urban Design Team and works under general direction of the Deputy Director, Long Range Planning. The AD is a key member of OP’s senior management team and is a senior-level professional with expert urban designer supervisory experience leading a team of professionals with expertise in urban design, architecture, landscape architecture and public space. The AD is responsible for leading OP’s efforts to advance design excellence for public and private projects in the D.C. The AD is also charged with promoting high-quality design outcomes in development and public space. This goal is accomplished through developing urban design strategies and initiatives that support the District’s distinct design character and promote equitable, sustainable and resilient community outcomes; collaborating with and advising District and federal agencies implementing projects that impact the city’s urban design; and elevating awareness of urban design issues in the District through engagement with the design community and residents.

Guidelines include standard urban planning and urban design principles, techniques, and practices, as well as laws and regulations such as the Comprehensive Plan and zoning and subdivision regulations, which govern planning practices in the District of Columbia.  Additional guidelines include administrative issuances of the Office of Planning, standard office policies and instructions received.

Work performed at this level requires the mastery and implementation of complex technical design and planning work in the department.  The incumbent is directly accountable for progress and results of the Urban Design Team’s work program and uses judgment and ingenuity in interpreting the intent of the guidelines that exist in specific areas of work.
