The Historic Preservation Office (HPO) promotes stewardship of the District of Columbia's historic and cultural resources through planning, protection and public outreach. HPO is the staff for the Historic Preservation Review Board and Mayor's Agent for historic preservation.

State Historic Preservation Office
As the State Historic Preservation Office for the District of Columbia, HPO carries out federal duties including historic preservation planning, survey and identification of historic properties, public education, preservation review of government projects, and promotion of rehabilitation tax credits.
Historic Preservation Review Board (HPRB)
The Historic Preservation Review Board designates historic landmarks and districts, reviews construction affecting those properties, and serves as a forum for community involvement in preservation.
Mayor's Agent
The Director of the Office of Planning is the Mayor’s Agent for historic preservation, providing guidance and ensuring that preservation is fully integrated with the city’s planning programs.
