Chris Shaheen

Chris Shaheen manages the Washington, DC, Office of Planning’s Public Space Program, working with private sector developers to implement streetscape regulations and guidelines that enhance the pedestrian experience and promote sustainable development practices. He has been instrumental in transforming the city’s public space application review process making sure these regulations and standards are followed.  His 20+ years of professional experience include working in the private sector and federal/local government.  Other projects he has worked on range from developing and implementing streetscape plans for large federal and educational campuses to completing the first comprehensive park and open space plan for Washington, DC in 30 years. He played a key role in leading discussions between the development community, environmental advocates, and government agencies that produced DC’s Green Building Act of 2006, recognized as the first legislation passed by a major US city to require green building certification for private construction. He is currently the Office of Planning’s representative on the Public Space Committee, a formal body that reviews public space applications to protect the interest of the general public, and is a member of Washington, DC’s Pedestrian Advisory Council.
