Chris Shaheen

Chris Shaheen is a native Washingtonian who studied landscape architecture and urban planning at Ball State University and has a graduate degree in American Studies from George Washington University. Passionate about urban places and how they define cities, he is dedicated to improving Washington, DC’s public spaces. He currently manages OP’s Urban Design Division. He is also OP’s representative on the District’s Public Space Committee where he has transformed how the city understands and regulates the public space that gives the city it’s park-like character and pedestrian scale. Other initiatives he led at OP include developing and implementing streetscape guidelines for Mount Vernon Triangle, NoMa, Buzzard Point, Kennedy Street, North Capitol Street, and Florida Avenue Market. His work in DC also includes completing the first comprehensive assessment of the District’s building projection regulations and CapitalSpace. In 2006, he played a key role in leading discussions between the development community, environmental advocates, and government agencies that culminated in DC’s Green Building Act, recognized as the first legislation passed by a major US city to require green building certification for private construction. Prior to working in the public sector, Chris worked as a preservation planner at Mary Means & Associates and a landscape designer at Jacobson Wallace Associates.
