Virginia Avenue Tunnel Fund Preservation Initiatives Grant Program Launched

(Washington, DC) -  Applications for matching grants for historic preservation projects within the area of Potential Effect for the Virginia Avenue Tunnel Reconstruction Project are now being accepted by the DC Preservation League.

The Virginia Avenue Tunnel Project, part of the DCPL Preservation Initiatives (PI) Program, targets activities that "preserve, restore, research, identify and evaluate, interpret or otherwise benefit historic resources within the project area.  The selection process will include ranking by the following criteria: Historic Significance, Project Management, Community Impact and Project Urgency.

The Virginia Avenue Tunnel Fund is administered by the DC Preservation League in consultation with the DC State Historic Preservation Office (DCSHPO). Funds were provided by CSX Transportation, Inc. through DCSHPO as mitigation for adverse affects associated with the reconstruction of the historic tunnel in accordance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
