Benning Road Corridor Redevelopment Framework

The Office of Planning (OP) has recently completed a community engagement process for the Benning Road Corridor.  This land development plan will provide a revitalization strategy for the corridor, and a framework to guide future private development and public investment.

The study boundary includes all property fronting Benning Road from Southern Avenue to Bladensburg Road.  Residents from neighborhoods and businesses along and adjacent to the Benning Road Corridor met over several months to work with OP to create a land development plan.

A consultant team compromised of the following:
  • Louis Berger Group, Inc. - land use/urban design
  • Economic Research Associates - economic analysis
  • Retail Compass - retail analysis
  • Justice and Sustainability Associates, LLC - public outreach/facilitation
were competively selected to assist OP in this process.

Four sub-areas have been defined as part of the study located along the Benning Road Corridor. Each sub-area has issues that are similar on some level and are unique to each one. The sub-areas are:
  • Bladensburg Road to Anacostia Avenue (Wards 5, 6 and 7)
  • 42nd Street, SE to Anacostia Avenue (Ward 7)
  • A Street, SE to 42nd Street, NE (Ward 7)
  • Southern Avenue to A Street, SE (Ward 7)
The Council will hold a public hearing on the Benning Road NE Corridor Redevelopment Framework Plan on June 10, 2008.  Community residents, property owners and merchants are encouraged to testify.Written comments must include the name, address and any organization for which the comments represent.  To provide oral testimony at the hearing, please contact Councilmember Alexander’s Office at (202) 724-8068 or contact Evelyn Kasongo at (202) 442-7600 for additional information.
