The Near Southeast Urban Design Framework provides a guiding vision for the development initiatives by the public and private sectors in the Near Southeast so that, when woven together through public policy and targeted actions, they produce a vibrant new waterfront neighborhood. The framework establishes a set of urban design principles that link and coordinate specific private projects with phased investments in the public realm.
The Near Southeast Urban Design Framework has its origins in a three-day community workshop convened in May of 2000 by the DC Office of Planning (OP) and the US General Services Administration. OP coordinated the Near Southeast Draft Urban Design Framework in a public planning process that has brought together the interests of citizen stakeholders, federal agencies, and private development projects to yield a plan that creates unprecedented public access to the Anacostia River and provides new development opportunities for mixed-income housing, offices, retail and cultural destinations. |
