 Georgia Avenue Revitalization Initiative

On June 28, 2000, Mayor Anthony A. Williams convened a Town Hall meeting to announce the District's Georgia Avenue Revitalization Initiative. The Government of the District of Columbia committed $111 million as a down payment on success along the historic Georgia Avenue corridor.

The Georgia Avenue Initiative paves the way for new investment and will leverage federal and private sector investment, provide new job opportunities, increase retail sales and services, enhance the community's image, and increase community pride. "We all wish to see Georgia Avenue return to its historic role—a vibrant and vital gateway into the Nation's Capital," said Mayor Williams. “I am excited that our restoration begins today.”

The goal is to transform Georgia Avenue into a series of distinct communities. The initiative identifies four neighborhood activity centers around which both public and private investments will be concentrated:

  • Shaw-Howard University Metro and Cultural District
  • Howard University District
  • Georgia/Petworth Metro District
  • Upper Georgia Avenue Gateway

The initiative helps existing businesses become more competitive and contribute to the growth of their neighborhoods. Historic districts and cultural landmarks are emphasized, attracting some of the 20 million tourists who visit DC’s monuments each year.

Momentum is building with new development on and near Georgia Avenue. The Georgia Avenue Revitalization Initiative respects the glory of the past and recognizes the potential for a great future.
