NoMA Plan Submitted to DC Council in October
(Washington, DC) After a year long planning effort that included extensive input from residents, business owners and other stakeholders in the NoMA area and surrounding neighborhoods, the DC Office of Planning presented the NoMA Vision Plan and Development Strategy to the DC Council for adoption as a Small Area Plan in October 2006. The goal of the plan is to facilitate the creation of a walkable, transit-accessible, dynamic, and diverse neighborhood with a mix of uses. By coordinating public and private investment and strengthening connections between new development, the new Metro station and nearby existing residential neighborhoods the isolation and vacancy in this area can be overcome. Small Area Plans are prepared for places in the city where District intervention is necessary to manage growth, promote revitalization, or achieve other long-range planning goals. Small Area Plans are not part of the Comprehensive Plan, but supplement the Comprehensive Plan by providing detailed direction for areas ranging is size from a few city blocks to entire neighborhoods or corridors. The Office of Planning (OP) prepared a legislative package for transmittal from the Mayor to the Council for adoption by resolution.
