The Third Public Forum for NoMA's Vision Plan Highlights Draft Recommendations

The third public planning meeting in the NoMA (North of Massachusetts Avenue) Vision Plan & Development Strategy initiative took place on Thursday, March 16, 2006 in Harding Hall on the 8th Floor of the US Government Printing Office Building. Area residents, property owners, and other interested individuals were updated on the status of the draft plan and took a look at budding concepts and proposals during the presentation titled Draft Plan-Emerging Recommendations. The presentation reiterated the vision for the area as a neighborhood with a dynamic mix of places to live, places to work and play, and neighborhood serving retail.

The plan strives to add value to the area by coordinating public investment with proposed private investment. Citizen concerns regarding preservation of existing neighborhoods, design and scale issues and the transitions from high-rise buildings to rowhouse style residential dwellings were addressed by several emerging recommendations. After the presentation by the Office of Planning staff members held one-on-one discussions with attendees and there were graphic displays depicting the emerging recommendations. The Mayor's Hearing, one of the legal steps that the process must undergo before it is approved by the DC Council as a small area plan, will be the next opportunity for a public meeting on the project. When the details for the Mayor's Hearing are resolved, public notices will be forthcoming announcing the date, time and location of the event.

The emerging NoMA vision proposes to attract new investment and create jobs, conserve the existing neighborhoods and result in a walkable, transit-accessible, dynamic, and diverse mixed-use area. Objectives include coordinated investment and strengthened connections between new development, the new Metro station, and nearby existing residential neighborhoods. A draft plan will be available in early May 2006.
