Mayor’s Awards for Excellence in Historic Preservation Marks Third Year
(Washington, DC) The Mayor’s Awards for Excellence in Historic Preservation will take place at the spectacular Art Deco style Kennedy-Warren Apartments, 3133 Connecticut Avenue NW on the evening of Saturday, October 22, 2005, when a total of 19 awards will be honored in six categories.
The event is hosted by the District of Columbia Historic Preservation Office, part of the city’s Office of Planning. Co-hosting the awards ceremony are the DC Preservation League, Pillsbury, Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP and the B.F. Saul Property Company.
This year’s award winners cover a broad variety of projects including a small house museum kitchen restoration project and an individual home rescue in the American University Park neighborhood to a community-based historic preservation brochure. Several innovative mixed use/housing projects are joined by an elementary school renovation/expansion project that came about thanks to the grass roots efforts of the neighborhood.
Among the award winners is: Charles Cassell, Architect, Consultant and Preservationist and former Historic Preservation Review Board member. Son of famed Howard University Architect Albert Cassell, Charles Cassell, AIA, will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award for his work and efforts in the District of Columbia. Other notable recipients include: Mayor’s Agent for Historic Preservation, Judge Rohulamin Quander, the Smithsonian Institution, the International Campaign for Tibet, and Capital Hill community activist George A. Didden, III.
The District of Columbia Historic Preservation Office (HPO) identifies, evaluates, protects, and enhances the historic properties and archaeological resources that are significant to local communities, the District of Columbia and the nation.
