(Washington, DC) The District of Columbia Office of Planning is preparing to release its first color Census 2000 Atlas. The Atlas is a synthesis of demographic patterns of the District’s population for the year 2000.
The Atlas, produced by the Office of Planning’s
State Data Center, utilizes data obtained from the US Census Bureau. The US Census Bureau provides data regarding the demographic and economic status of the District’s population at various intervals. The majority of the Census data releases are presented in tabular form, that often make it difficult to pinpoint the degree of diversity in the District’s population and economy.
In light of the focus of the Office of Planning’s Comprehensive Plan “
Vision for Growing an Inclusive City,” it is increasingly important for policy makers and the general public to have an accessible and easy to understand portrait that shows the diverse geographic patterns that exist for the District.
This Atlas, the first full colored atlas prepared by the State Data Center utilizing the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) capabilities of the Office of Planning, is an attempt to display this diversity. It presents 74 key indicators both as maps and tables about District residents categorized into seven broad groups: population, housing, income, education, disability, language isolation and traffic analysis.
Ellen McCarthy, Director of the Planning Office, has stated, “I congratulate the individuals participating in this publication for their efforts in producing this atlas. They joined together to give the District government and the public a valuable product for population analyses. I hope District citizens will find this publication a useful addition to their library.”
