(Washington, DC) On May 24, 2005, the Anacostia Waterfront Corporation (AWC), the DC Office of Planning (OP), and the DC Department of Transportation (DDOT), in collaboration with the DC Sports and Entertainment Commission, held a public meeting at the King-Greenleaf Recreational Center in southwest DC for communities around the South Capitol Street Corridor and the area near the planned ballpark. This meeting served as an important opportunity for the community to help define the vision for South Capitol Street Corridor and shape how the planned new ballpark will be integrated into surrounding neighborhoods. Over 200 community residents, property owners and agency representatives were in attendance.
The Meeting Goals were: 1) to review key development issues and opportunities identified in prior public meetings; 2) to discuss planning team actions and recommendations that respond to public issues and concerns; and 3) to update the public on the ballpark district planning process, inter-agency activity and timeline for next steps.
Agency leads recapped the key public issues, concerns and planning options regarding the South Capitol Street Corridor and ballpark. Descriptions of the timelines for further agency action were also provided.
A number of key public concerns and issues were raised during a facilitated discussion. A summary of points made by participants follows. Errors or omissions are the responsibility of the JSA facilitation team.
The next public meeting is scheduled to take place this summer, date and location to be determined.
