(Washington, DC) The Office of Planning will soon begin work on a Vision Plan and Development Strategy for a 470-acre area in downtown that includes portions of adjacent neighborhoods. The planning area is comprised of underutilized land north of Massachusetts Avenue, anchored by the new Metro stop at New York and Florida Avenues and the magnificent Union Station. The area lies less than a mile from the US Capitol and is contiguous with the Ivy City, Trinidad, Stanton Park, Near Northeast, and Eckington neighborhoods, and the Sursum Corda residential area. The Office of Planning will work with the selected consultant team, partner agencies, local residents, property owners, and developers to undertake this yearlong project. The resulting plan will guide future public and private investment and inspire a new standard of urban design and development for Washington, DC.
The Framework Plan will outline real estate market conditions, establish land use and density goals, restore connections between redevelopment, and build a consensus for formal strategies. The Framework Plan will be premised on citywide planning objectives aimed at creating "great workplaces," "active streets," "a reconnected city," appropriate neighborhood services, a dynamic public realm, and preservation of the area's industrial/warehouse legacy.
The plan area is subdivided into: 1)
The Redevelopment Area – prime for expansion of Downtown DC as a vibrant, livable, 21st-century community, and; 2)
The Revitalization Area – existing residential neighborhoods in need of services and improvements, as well as re-established connections to surrounding areas.
