Public Space and Parks

Parks and public space play an important role in recreation, aesthetics, neighborhood character, and environmental quality for any modern city. But unlike most juridictions, the District controls less that 26 percent of parkland in the city, and depends on other agencies to administer park services and serve the citizens of the District. Starting with CapitalSpace in 2006, the Office of Planning has worked with federal partners, including the National Park Service and the National Capital Planning Commission, to create a unified vision for the District’s park system and develop collaborative partnerships to enhance the value of federal parks to District residents.

In addition, the Office of Planning has partnered with the District Department of Parks and Recreation on master planning and facility planning services for District controlled parks and works with the District Department of Transportation on policy development for and review of public space within District Right-of-Way.
