Afterschool programs

DCPS afterschool programs provide much more than afternoon supervision.

They allow students to participate in academic and extracurricular enrichment activities and to develop new hobbies and skills. Community based organizations and DCPS teachers and aides provide a variety of unique programming options to students.

Participation in high-quality afterschool programs has been proven to improve school attendance, academic achievement, graduation rates and attitudes toward learning. Students attending three hours of afterschool programming each day gain the equivalent of nearly four months of learning time.

Enrolling in Afterschool Programs Managed by the Office of Out-of-School Time Programs

DCPS has updated its traditional afterschool program for students in preschool through eighth grade.

For the majority of families, the afterschool program offered by their school will be managed by the Office of Out-of-School Time Programs and will look much the same as last year.  The hours of operation will remain 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.

For the first time, select schools are offering afterschool and extended-day programs that are funded through our Proving What’s Possible (PWP) grant awards. For those schools, the hours of operation may be different than they were last year, and the academic programming will more closely resemble what's offered during the regular school day.  For questions about PWP programs, contact the principal at your child's school.

For afterschool sites managed by the Office of Out-of-School Time, the program will begin on Aug. 27, 2012 and operate from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Families may begin enrolling in Out-of-School Time afterschool programs managed by the Office of Out-of-School-Time Programs at their school on Monday, Aug. 20, 2012.

All families are encouraged to register for afterschool programs.  Factors such as the legal status of parents or children will not prevent a student from enrolling in or attending afterschool programming. Read letter to parents and families. [Español | Vietnamese | Chinese | Amharic]
