Ward 7 Informational Meeting for the Potential Recreation Use of 11th Street Bridge

The Office of Planning has held informational meetings for residents of Wards 6, 7, and 8 to gather ideas, receive comments, and answer questions. On March 28th, the Office of Planning held the first informational meeting on the bridge at its offices at 1100 4th Street SW. Over 65 people attended and provided feedback and ideas for the bridge.

Students from the District Summer Youth Employment Program(SYEP) helped design a model of the 11th Street Bridge Concept incorporating their own concepts and ideas. Guided by the DC Office of Planning and THEARC, students produced activity concepts which the DC Office of Planning will use to inform planning decisions on the potential 11th Street Recreation Bridge. 11th Street Bridge Recreation and Destination Concept
The 11th Street Bridge Recreation and Destination is an exploration of design concepts for creating a new waterfront and adventure recreation attraction for the entire District in heart of the Southeast part of the city. If realized, the bridge would help unify the waterfront neighborhoods of Wards 6, 7 and 8, and be a hub connecting parks, trails, and recreation assets up and down both sides of the Anacostia River.
While the project offers a great opportunity to create a unifying icon and bring unique recreation offerings to the Southeast part of the city; actually seeing this project realized will be very challenging and will require the input and support of many Washingtonians. In addition, long-term private/non-profit involvement is vital for realizing both the initial construction and long term operation and maintenance of the recreation bridge. The Office of Planning is currently seeking partnerships with the private and non-profit entities to realize this vision. Over the next several months the Office of Planning, working with partners, will determine a program of uses that have market viability, develop solutions for land-side connections, and analyze the potential of the bridge to activate business development in the landside communities. We will also measure health benefits to the families of adjacent neighborhoods and the District; and measure the economic and employment impacts on adjacent communities in Wards 6, 7, and 8.
The Office of Planning invites communities on both sides of the river, the residents and business owners of the District, and other interested people to get involved and offer their ideas for ways for programming the bridge and the surrounding parkland.
Following the Ward meetings the Office of Planning will launch a national design competition to generate a popular and iconic design for the bridge and test competing designs for cost and constructability. The Office of Planning will also engage local youth this summer to generate ideas for the potential program of uses on the bridge and in design connections to the water and neighborhoods on both sides of the River.
Several District agencies are involved in this initiative: the Office of Planning, District Department of Transportation, District Department on the Environment, Department of Parks and Recreation, and the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development.
